Coffee cakes are the unsung heroes of brunch. They may not be as flashy as pancakes, or as iconic as eggs Benedict, but let’s face it, no brunch spread is truly complete without a delicious coffee cake. That is why I am going to share with you my favorite recipe – Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake.

One of the best things about this recipe is how easy it is to make. It only requires simple ingredients and just one bowl. In fact, you may already have all the ingredients in your pantry. The recipe has a perfect blend of cinnamon sugar and buttery layers that melt in your mouth with every bite. The combination is so comforting and homey that no matter how much you resist, you will find yourself reaching for seconds.

If you are a fan of bundt cakes, this recipe will be your new best friend. One of the great advantages of using a bundt pan is the distribution of heat throughout the batter, which allows for an evenly baked cake. Additionally, the cake’s shape looks like it’s straight out of a gourmet bakery.

Finally, what’s not to love about a treat that tastes even better when reheated? This coffee cake is one that gets better with time. You can store it for up to four days in an airtight container at room temperature or freeze for longer shelf life. Whether enjoying it in the morning with hot coffee or as an afternoon snack, this cinnamon swirl coffee cake will brighten up any day.

Don’t take my word for it though; try this recipe yourself and find out why it’s one of my all-time favorites. You’ll soon be convinced that there is nothing quite like the taste of homemade baked goods on your breakfast table.

This irresistible aroma will get you out of bed.

Now that we’ve gotten all your ingredients gathered together, let’s dive into making the perfect Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of a “swirl” – it’s much easier than it sounds!

Mixing the Batter

First things first: let’s preheat our oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). While that’s warming up, let’s mix together our dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl:

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt

In a separate, larger bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together:

  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar

Beat until the mixture is pale and fluffy, then add in the wet ingredients one at a time. Make sure you scrape down the sides of the bowl as you mix! Add in:

  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup (200g) sour cream

Once these ingredients are fully incorporated, slowly add in the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined – do not over-mix or your cake will turn out tough.

Making the Cinnamon Swirl Filling

Next up comes the fun part: creating your cinnamon streusel filling! In a small bowl, mix together:

  • 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup (120g) chopped walnuts

Set this bowl aside for now.

Assembling Your Cake

Let’s grease up that bundt pan with some cooking spray so our cake doesn’t stick! Once that’s done, it’s time to assemble your swirl coffee cake:

  1. Pour about 1/3 of your batter into the bottom of the pan.
  2. Sprinkle half of your cinnamon streusel mixture on top.
  3. Add another 1/3 of batter on top of the cinnamon layer.
  4. Add the other half of your cinnamon mixture on top of the new batter layer.
  5. Finally, pour in the last of your batter.

Finishing Touches

To finish off our cake, we’ll create one final layer: the crumb topping! In a small bowl or food processor, mix together:

  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour

Dollop or sprinkle this mixture on top of the entire surface area of your cake batter.

Don’t have all the ingredients on hand? No problem! There are several substitutions and variations that you can make to customize this cinnamon swirl coffee cake recipe to your liking.

– Gluten-Free: For a gluten-free variation, swap out the all-purpose flour for a 1-to-1 gluten-free flour blend. King Arthur and Bob’s Red Mill both make great options.

– Nut-Free: If you’re allergic to walnuts or simply don’t like them, try replacing them with pecans or hazelnuts in the cinnamon streusel mixture.

– Cheesecake-Filled: Craving something even more decadent? You can add a cream cheese filling by using half of the batter and layering on top of the cinnamon sugar mixture before adding the rest of the batter.

– Apple Cinnamon Swirl: Take advantage of seasonal produce by incorporating diced apples into the cinnamon swirl mixture. Toss sliced apples with cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar before layering it into the cake.

– Yellow Cake Mix: For an easy shortcut, swap out the dry ingredients for a yellow cake mix instead.

Tips for Perfect Results

One bite and you'll be in cinnamon paradise.
One bite and you’ll be in cinnamon paradise.

Now that we’ve got the recipe for Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake down pat, let’s jump into the tips for perfect results. As someone who has been in the coffee industry for years, I have learned a thing or two about making the perfect coffee cake. Here are my top tips for ensuring that your Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake turns out amazing every time.

Firstly, it’s important to use room temperature eggs and butter when making this recipe. This helps to ensure that all of your ingredients can mix together evenly and your batter becomes nice and smooth. Speaking of mixing, don’t overmix your batter! Mixing too much can result in a tough cake with air pockets. So, if you want a moist and tender cake with a delicate crumb, mix until just incorporated.

Additionally, using quality ingredients will make a significant difference in how your cake tastes. Don’t skimp on the good stuff – use high-quality sour cream, walnuts, cinnamon, and vanilla extract for maximum flavor.

Another key tip is that it’s crucial to spoon the cinnamon sugar mixture gently over the crumb topping to create those swirled layers that make this coffee cake so delicious. Use a butter knife to gently swirl everything together by dragging the knife through the batter.

Lastly, when baking the Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake, make sure you do not overbake it. The trick to perfectly baked cakes is to remove them from the oven right as soon as the toothpick comes out clean. Over-baking results in a dry cake with burned edges that ruins all of your hard work.

If you follow these tips, then you’ll have an incredibly delicious Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake that’ll impress everyone who tries it. Remember to take your time while making this recipe and enjoy every step of the process – trust me, it’ll be worth it!

Bottom Line

This Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake recipe is truly one of a kind. With its rich, buttery flavor and the perfect balance of cinnamon and sugar, this cake is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. It’s easy to make and can be whipped up in no time, making it perfect for any occasion.
