The Recipe How-To

Now that you’re excited to make these better-than-Starbucks blueberry muffins, let’s get down to the recipe! Follow these easy steps for a bakery-style treat that will make your taste buds dance.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 3/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) of salted butter, melted and cooled
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups of fresh blueberries

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a muffin pan with paper cups.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, use a whisk to mix together the wet ingredients: melted butter, eggs, water and vanilla extract.
  4. Add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients bowl and stir until just combined. Do not over-mix as this can make the muffins too dense. Even if there are small lumps left in the batter, that is perfectly fine.
  5. Fold in fresh blueberries into the batter gently using a rubber spatula. Do not mix too much as this can break down the blueberries and dye the batter purple.
  6. Scoop the batter into each muffin paper cup filling it up to about three-fourths full.
  7. Bake for around 20 -25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.
  8. Let the muffins cool for a few minutes in the pan and then remove them from the pan to cool completely on a wire rack.

Enjoy your delicious homemade blueberry muffins!

Additional Notes:

  • For extra texture, add some ground walnuts in the batter.
  • If you don’t have fresh blueberries, frozen ones work just as well. But be sure to thaw them in room temperature and pat them dry before folding them into the batter.
  • You can also make other variations like blueberry scones or blueberry crumble muffins. Just tweak the recipe a bit by adding different toppings or mix-ins, and voilà!

One of the best things about this blueberry muffin recipe is that it’s incredibly versatile. You can make a few simple substitutions to customize your muffins to your liking.

For starters, you can swap out the blueberries for any other berry you prefer. This recipe works well with fresh or frozen raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even mix and match different berries for a tasty twist on the classic blueberry muffin.

If you’re looking for a healthier option, you can substitute some of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. This will add a nutty flavor to your muffins and increase their fiber content. You can also reduce the amount of sugar in this recipe if you like by using a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup instead.

If you have dietary restrictions or preferences, fear not! This recipe can easily be made vegan by swapping out the eggs for flax eggs and using plant-based milk instead of dairy milk. Gluten-free flour works well as a 1:1 substitution for all-purpose flour, so those with gluten intolerances can still enjoy these delicious muffins.

For an extra decadent treat, consider adding some chocolate chips or white chocolate chunks to the batter. Adding some almond extract imparts a delicious nuttiness that complements the blueberries perfectly.

By following the original recipe and using these substitution ideas and variations, you’re sure to end up with a batch of delicious muffins that are just right for your taste buds!

Making-ahead, storing, and reheating these Better-Than-Starbucks Blueberry Muffins is easy and convenient, making them perfect for busy mornings or as a quick snack. When baked properly, these muffins will remain moist and flavorful for several days. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your muffins.

To make-ahead: prepare the muffin batter as instructed and refrigerate it overnight in an airtight container. In the morning, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the muffins for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. This is a great option when you want warm muffins without doing all the prep work in the morning.

To store: Keep your blueberry muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Refrigerating them may cause them to dry out faster, so steer clear of putting them in the fridge.

To reheat: To get your muffins warm again, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and wrap them in foil with a splash of water on top. Place them in the oven for about 10 minutes or microwave one at a time for roughly 15 seconds until heated through.

Note: We highly discourage from reheating muffins too many times, as they will become hard and tough when overcooked or over-heated.

If you have any leftover blueberry muffins that you want to repurpose -try freezing them by an air-tight container or tightly wrapped in aluminum foil. Simply leave any desired number out on the counter or overnight thawing inside the refrigerator for an hour or two before serving.

With these tips in mind, you can certainly enjoy hot and fresh-tasting Better-Than-Starbucks Blueberry Muffins anytime you fancy it!

Tips for Perfect Results

Prepare yourself for a mouth full of flavor with each bite of these blueberry muffins.

If you want to elevate your muffin-making skills and come up with muffins that look and taste bakery-style, here are some tips to achieve perfect results:

First and foremost, use fresh blueberries. Fresh blueberries make the best muffins, so don’t ever hesitate to spend a few extra bucks on it.

Another tip, when making the batter, combine the dry ingredients thoroughly before adding the wet ones. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground walnuts for better flavor incorporation.

When whisking eggs into the wet ingredients, make sure they’re at room temperature. This allows them to properly emulsify with the other ingredients and create a smooth batter.

The secret to making your muffins cake-like inside is by not overmixing the wet and dry mixtures. Just mix them until combined—no need to overdo it!

For an added crunch to your muffins crumbly top, sprinkle streusel over its top before baking.

Another suggestion is adding yogurt or sour cream to the batter. This is my personal favorite because it adds tanginess, moisture and makes the muffins more tender.

Once you’ve filled the muffin liners or greased muffin cups with the batter, let it rest for several minutes before putting them inside your pre-heated oven. Doing this will give time for your baked goodies to rise evenly while in the oven.

Lastly, don’t be tempted to open the oven door while baking! The sudden change of temperature may cause the muffins to sink in the middle.

With these tips in mind, you can expect your homemade blueberry muffins—whether they’re a copycat of Starbucks or not—to be a delicious success.

As a professional barista, I know that making the perfect blueberry muffins can be challenging, but don’t worry, I have got you covered. After testing and tweaking this recipe multiple times, I’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions that will help you make a batch of delicious blueberry muffins with ease. Keep on reading to find out!

How can I enhance my store bought muffin mix?

As a barista, I highly recommend adding fresh or frozen berries to your berry muffin recipe. While the mix will already have some berries included, don’t be afraid to add even more for a burst of fruity flavor. Just remember, the more berries, the merrier – so go ahead and be generous with your fruit additions.

Another great addition to your muffin batter is zest. Whether you have a lemon, orange or lime on hand, zest the fruit and stir it into the batter. This will give your muffins a tangy citrus kick and make them even more delicious.

For a creamier texture, consider filling your muffins with cream cheese. Simply add a dollop or two of cream cheese to the center of each muffin before baking. This will create an ooey-gooey surprise inside your muffins that your taste buds will thank you for.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a sweeter filling option, consider adding jam or fruit curd. Whether you prefer a classic strawberry jam or something more exotic like passion fruit curd, this will add a burst of flavor and sweetness to your muffins. So go ahead and experiment with different fillings until you find the perfect one for you.

What can I add to muffin mix to make it taste better?

Looking to jazz up your usual cup of coffee? Here are some tasty tips and tricks to take it to the next level. For a fruity twist, consider adding fresh bananas, strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries to your brew. To escalate the crunch factor, adding nuts and dried fruit is a top-notch choice. For a sweet finish, dip the rim of your cup in melted butter and give it a roll in cinnamon and sugar. Craving a crumbly topping? Get your hands on a homemade streusel recipe and adorn your mug with it. If you want to experiment with flavors in your coffee, swap the prescribed liquid with fruit juice. With these additions, your cup of coffee will be transformed into a treat that will leave you craving more!

How do you make blueberry muffins not soggy?

There’s nothing more disheartening than biting into a muffin with a soggy bottom. Fortunately, there’s a simple fix to prevent this issue. To avoid fruit from sinking to the bottom of the muffin, coat them with a small amount of flour from the recipe’s dry ingredients, about one or two tablespoons should suffice. This method creates a protective layer that will prevent the fruit from sinking while baking, resulting in a perfectly baked muffin.

What is the difference between a blueberry muffin and a blueberry cupcake?

The texture and appearance of cupcakes and muffins can be quite different due to variations in dough thickness and topping. While muffins often have a mushroom-like top with a defined, crunchy texture, cupcakes tend to have a smoother, flatter top without the same degree of texture development.

Better-Than-Starbucks Blueberry Muffins

Better-Than-Starbucks Blueberry Muffins Recipe

The Starbucks Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins used to be my most favourite treat in the world to eat. I could literally eat them all day – for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Unfortunately, according to the information found on the Starbucks website, each of the Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins contains 56 grams of carbs. On my low-carb diet, that amount of carbs is greater than my total daily carb allotment. So, for the sake of health, strength, and beauty, I had to bid farewell to those sweet lovelies. A few months ago, though, I buried myself in my kitchen (my favourite place!) and started experimenting with low-carb alternatives to the Starbucks Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins. Today, when I want a treat with my Starbucks coffee, I make my own Better-Than-Starbucks Blueberry Muffins. Low on carb, high on taste! Perfect with Starbucks coffee or any other coffee or tea of your choice. Try these low-carb muffins and let me know if you like them, too.
