The Recipe How-To

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Prepare cake batter: In a large bowl, I’ll combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a bowl. Then, I’ll mix them all together.

In another bowl, add 1 egg, 1 cup of skim milk, 1/3 cup of canola oil, 1/4 cup of nonfat sour cream, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, and mix well.

Next, I’ll gradually pour my wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until smooth.

Make cinnamon streusel: In a medium mixing bowl, I will combine 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar,2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, and 1/3 cup melted margarine. Using your fingers or a baking spatula, I will gently knead this mixture until it forms crumbs.

Assemble the cake: Grease an eight-inch pan with margarine or use parchment paper to prevent sticking. Pour half the cake batter into the prepared pan. Then evenly sprinkle half of the cinnamon streusel on top of the batter. Repeat with the remaining batter and last half of the cinnamon streusel.

Bake! Bake! Bake!: Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown on top and inserted toothpick comes out clean in center. Let it cool off for at least 10 minutes before serving.

This cinnamon-streusel coffee cake is perfect for breakfast served alongside some warm brewed coffee or apple cider!

Substitutions and Variations

In my years of experience, I’ve learned that one of the joys of cooking is the ability to experiment with different ingredients and make something new. Here are some substitution and variation ideas for your Streusel Coffee Cake that I think you’ll enjoy.

Firstly, you can try swapping out the margarine or canola oil for unsalted butter, which will lend this cake a rich and creamy flavor. Another variation would be to replace nonfat sour cream with plain yoghurt or Greek yoghurt for a tangier taste. If you prefer to skip dairy altogether, go for almond milk instead of skim milk.

Looking to spice things up? Instead of using plain cinnamon in your streusel topping, try mixing in 1/4 cup of ground pecans or walnuts. You can also create a fruity variation by swapping out the cinnamon sugar filling with fresh blueberries or raspberries mixed with a tablespoonful of sugar.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even make an apple streusel coffee cake by incorporating 1/2 cup finely diced apples into the batter prepared with cinnamon sugar mixture sprinkled over it. Or maybe you’d like to mix things up with a pumpkin crumb coffee cake by adding 1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree and toasted pecans on top of the batter before baking it.

For those looking to cut down on sugar intake, decrease the amount of brown sugar in half and replace some (or all) granulated sugar with natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.

No matter how you choose to make your coffee cake, don’t be afraid to experiment! The best coffee cakes come from those who are willing to give new ingredients and ideas a chance.

When it comes to serving and pairing Streusel Coffee Cake, there are plenty of options. The warm, delicate flavor and texture of this cake make it a perfect breakfast or brunch pastry. You can enjoy it with coffee or tea, or even a glass of cold milk.

One option for serving Streusel Coffee Cake is to keep it simple and pair it with a classic cup of coffee. The rich, earthy flavors of the coffee complement the cinnamon and brown sugar notes in the cake. Pairing the cake with a good quality coffee can enhance your overall sensory experience!

Another great idea is to pair your Streusel Coffee Cake with fresh fruit or berries. These colorful and delicious treats add a bright flavor and beautiful pop of color that will compliment the cake perfectly. Slice up some apples, bananas or berries and pile them high on top of your warm coffee cake slice.

If you want to take things up a notch, try adding whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top. The smoothness of the cream will balance out the crunchiness from the streusel topping & provide an extra indulgent taste.

As for presentation, you can serve the streusel coffee cake in various ways including cutting it into thick slices, wedges or cube shapes as per requirements.

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

For those who enjoy the convenience of meal prep, you can make the Streusel Coffee Cake ahead of time and store it for later. To save time in the morning, prepare the crumb topping, cake batter, and cinnamon streusel ahead of time, then refrigerate separately for up to 2 days.

When you’re ready to make coffee cake, let the ingredients come to room temperature, then mix together only when you’re ready to bake. You don’t want your cake batter too warm or too cold before cooking as this can affect the texture of your cake.

After enjoying your scrumptious Streusel Coffee Cake fresh from the oven, you can store any leftover portions in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. If that timeline doesn’t work for you, you may freeze any leftover slices for up to two weeks by wrapping them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

When reheating your coffee cake’s individual slices or whole cake prior to serving, I recommend using an oven over a microwave or stovetop because these methods can cause the moisture in the cake to evaporate or become soggy. Instead, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C), gently lay your slices on a baking sheet and warm them for about 10-12 minutes until warm with a crisp top. When reheating a whole cake, wrap it with foil and heat for about 10-15 minutes until warmed through. Don’t forget to restrain yourself from completely devouring it immediately after cooking!

Tips for Perfect Results

The perfect balance of sweetness and spice
The perfect balance of sweetness and spice

If there’s anything I’ve learned in my years as a barista, it’s that attention to detail makes all the difference when it comes to crafting the perfect cup of coffee or, in this case, a delectable streusel coffee cake. While the recipe for this cinnamon-spiced treat may seem straightforward enough, incorporating certain tips and techniques can take your bake from good to great.

To start with, be sure to accurately measure all of your ingredients before mixing them together. Baking is all about precision and even the slightest deviation from your recipe’s measurements can throw off the delicate balance of flavors and textures. It’s also important to use room temperature ingredients when possible, as they’ll more readily blend together for a smoother batter.

When it comes to preparing your cake pan, make sure it’s well greased with margarine or canola oil before adding any batter. This will help prevent the cake from sticking and keep its shape intact.

While stirring together ingredients may seem simple, it’s important not to overmix the batter. Overmixing can lead to air bubbles and tough cake instead of soft moist deliciousness!

For an even more indulgent treat, try experimenting with different streusel variations like apple or raspberry instead of classic cinnamon sugar. And if you prefer your coffee cake on the lighter side, use skim milk instead of whole and nonfat sour cream instead of regular.

Lastly but certainly not least, let your cake cool completely before slicing into it. Not only will this make for neater cuts, but giving the cake time to set after baking allows for flavors to meld together resulting in a tastier bite!

With these tips and tricks up your sleeve, you’ll be well equipped to make the best coffee cakes–whether old-fashioned or streusel or beyond–in town!

Bottom Line

In conclusion, this streusel coffee cake recipe is the perfect treat to satisfy your sweet cravings. The combination of cinnamon, brown sugar, and all-purpose flour creates a complex blend of flavors that make each bite more enjoyable than the last.
