The Recipe How-To

Now that we’ve discussed the ingredients, let’s get into the fun part, making the coffee cake! There are three parts to this recipe: the cake batter, the apple streusel filling, and the streusel topping.

Making the Cake Batter

To make the cake batter, first preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

In a separate bowl, cream 1/2 cup unsalted butter with 3/4 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add in 2 eggs, one at a time, followed by 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Gradually add in the flour mixture and mix well. Finally, stir in 1/2 cup greek yogurt and mix until just combined.

Making the Apple Streusel Filling

Once you have made the cake batter, it’s time to make the apple streusel filling. Peel and dice 1 apple into small pieces and place them in a medium bowl. Add in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon of lemon zest, followed by 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice.

Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed throughout.

Making the Streusel Topping

To make the streusel topping, combine 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and 6 tablespoons salted butter (at room temperature) together in a separate bowl.

Using a pastry cutter or fork, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Assembling the Cake

Now that all three components are made, it’s time to assemble the cake! Grease an 8×8-inch baking pan with cooking spray.

Pour half the cake batter into the pan and spread evenly. Top with the apple streusel filling, followed by the remaining batter. Sprinkle the streusel topping over the top of the cake.

Baking

Bake the cake at 350°F (180°C) for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let cool before dusting with powdered sugar and slicing into pieces. Enjoy this delicious and easy apple streusel coffee cake warm with a cup of coffee or tea.

Substitutions and Variations

A slice of heaven for your morning coffee.

Dear readers, I understand the desire to put your own personal twist on this delectable recipe. Whether you’re looking to cater to dietary restrictions or add new flavors, here are some substitutions and variations to make this apple-streusel coffee cake truly your own.

Firstly, for those who want to make this recipe gluten-free, try replacing the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend that can replace wheat-based flours cup for cup. You can also swap out the regular butter for unsalted vegan butter or coconut oil for a delicious and dairy-free alternative.

For those looking to add some more flavor to their coffee cake, you can mix it up by using pear slices in place of apples. This variation adds depth and sweetness while still pairing beautifully with the streusel topping. Another option is adding 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder in addition to the flour mixture for a chocolate twist!

We all know cinnamon lovers; so why not modify the recipe slightly and turn it into a cinnamon swirl coffee cake? Instead of preparing the streusel topping, simply mix together 1/4 cup of granulated white sugar with 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Add half of the batter to the prepared pan, sprinkle with half of the cinnamon sugar mixture, then spoon in remaining batter and repeat.

If you’re short of a few ingredients, don’t worry! You could replace lemon juice and zest with orange juice and zest or even lime juice for a tropical flavor. Also using Greek yogurt instead of sour cream is an option that produces equally good results.

Lastly, those who love variety could experiment with different nuts in making Streusel Topping such as pecans or almonds, or mix them up by combining different types or adding oats to give it extra crunch!

Remember, do not be afraid to experiment in baking; after all, it is an art! Have fun exploring these substitutions and variations and let us know how they turn out for you.

But, it’s not just coffee that can give this cake justice. You can also pair it with a rich hot chocolate or even a warm spiked cider on a chilly autumn afternoon for an extra kick.

If you want to take it up a notch, you can serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or some freshly whipped cream, which provides a nice balance to its sweetness. Another suggestion would be to serve this cake as an after-dinner dessert during family gatherings or special events.

Tips for Perfect Results

Dear reader, it’s no secret that the perfect recipe is made up of more than just quality ingredients, a good oven, and a skilled barista. To truly make your Easy Apple-Streusel Coffee Cake shine, I present to you some valuable tips.

Firstly, it’s important to use quality apples that are not too tart nor too sweet. Using the right kind of apple accounts for quite an impact in how flavorful the cake tastes. Delicious apple varieties like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith are great options that hold their texture well and won’t disintegrate in the cake batter.

Secondly, after mixing your dry and wet ingredients into the batter, add some lemon zest to brighten things up. Not only will this enhance its flavor but also lighten and lift the heaviness of this dessert.

Moreover, when making the streusel topping, it is essential to keep all the ingredients at room temperature for better incorporation. Specifically, ensure the butter is softened so that it creams evenly with sugar; otherwise, you’ll end up with an uneven streusel topping on your cake.

Additionally, do not skip lining your pan with parchment paper or greasing it as extra insurance to prevent your cake from sticking. You can choose either method for best results or even combine both as they complement each other well.

Lastly, for a more decadent effect sift powdered sugar over the top of the cooled cake for added sweetness without compromising texture balanced by its own ingredients.

Follow these tips closely to elevate your Easy Apple-Streusel Coffee Cake game and enjoy how perfectly tender and delicious this dessert would turn out to be. Keep these pointers in mind when baking future coffee cakes and allow them to refine your technique further.
